Park Use Guidelines
EQUESTRIAN PARK AND COTTER PLOTS, YARRALUMLA
beginning April 2000
GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR USE
-
THE WASH BAY is located close to the Besser Block toilets and the block of 12 steel yards in the Park. Washing down horses at other points could create boggy and unpleasant conditions for other people.
-
DOGS are to be ON LEADS AND UNDER CONTROL AT ALL TIMES.
-
ELECTRIC POWER is only available for use inside the pavilion and, externally, for a public address system.
-
VEHICLE MOVEMENTS: In preparation and during any event Hirers should keep vehicle movements to a minimum, especially on Competition Areas and on the Cross-country Course. Keep vehicle speeds to below 20 kph and restrict movement to gravel and established dirt tracks. The objective is to avoid creating new tracks and CAUSING COMPACTION.
-
Horse riders and instructors are asked to AVOID USE OF THE SAME TRACKS in competition or exercise areas to avoid compaction of the soil and to allow grass cover to regrow.
HORSE SECURITY
-
To avoid the possibility of horses straying into traffic, with all the consequent risks of INJURY, DEATH AND DAMAGE to people and property, horses staying overnight at Equestrian Park are to be kept secure and supervised. The permanent yards may be hired, or if it is permitted by the relevant horse sport, temporary enclosures can be erected within the security fencing of the Cotter Plots. Camping and enclosures for horses are not permitted on the cross-country course. To enhance horse safety, the double gates from the Park onto the Cotter Road should be closed when practicable.
-
Access to space for TEMPORARY ENCLOSURES to be erected and for CAMPING (Cotter Plots) is provided through the double gates directly on the left as vehicles turn off the Cotter Road. There should be a camping supervisor to guide you to a satisfactory site.
-
Access to 35 steel YARDS is from the gravel roadway 250 metres towards the Woolshed, and to get to the 33 Pony Club YARDS it is necessary to travel along the full length of the road and pass the Woolshed.
-
Horses staying overnight are required to be under the observation and supervision of a responsible person designated by the owner.
-
Advance notification is required of yarding required for stallions so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
-
As inferred in the General Conditions of Hire, special consideration is to be given to the plantation trees of the Park. NO TREES ARE TO BE USED TO SUPPORT TEMPORARY ENCLOSURES AND TREES AND FENCES ARE NOT YO BE USED TO TETHER HORSES. HORSES SHOULD BE YARDED AWAY FROM TREES TO PREVENT CHEWING DAMAGE.
DAY USE OF YARDS
Persons using the yards for events such as gymkhanas, showjumping, should make arrangements with the Hiring club to get access to the yards and pay their dues of $5/day/horse.
CAMPING
-
CAMPING is limited to a maximum of TWO NIGHTS except under exceptional circumstances. Persons wishing to stay for longer periods should either make arrangements to use the permanent yards (see para 3 above) or make use of facilities such as Exhibition Park In Canberra (EPIC) or commercial yarding and stabling centres.
-
FIRES for individuals ARE NOT PERMITTED.
-
There is no electricity available on site for campers. Generators may be used between 7am and 10pm.
-
The office and shed, and the surrounding area, in the Cotter Plots are off limits.
